30 things I wished my final
year seniors would have told me (and I should have listened) when I entered
first year of medical school
aka things I would have tell
my 1st year self if I can go back through time
on decisions to be a doctor
1. if you have never put "doctor" as one of your
ambitions in your tadika, primary or secondary school, then you should probably
reconsider taking this course
2. if you're in medical school because either your father
wants you to, or your mother wants you to, or both, and not a single feeling
that its because you want to, then you should seriously reconsider taking this
course
3. if you're still deciding to try anyway, then you should
start from your first year to love medicine little by little. its gonna be just
fine. kita buat apa yg parents kita suka, Allah akan bantu kita.
4. if however, you’re in for the money, or the status, or
whatever other worldly reasons, then quit medic now and choose other course.
believe me its not worthy going through hell just for that.
on studying
5. start writing your own notes from your first day of
first year of medical school. aim so that by end of your 5th year,
whatever topics you want to look for you don’t have to refer back to textbooks,
its all in your notes.
6. study consistently. aim to study atleast 2 topics per
day (or more if you think you can). consistently, everyday.
7. find your own study methods that works best for you.
some students just read and still can answer, some write notes, some make
flashcards, some draw mindmaps, some create own powerpoints, some listing
questions, some highlight their textbooks, some just conteng2 kertas a4, and
etc2. try various methods until you find which one gives the most joy of
learning for you.
8. stick with one study method for atleast one week. 5
years of medical school and experimenting different studying methods, I can
tell you this : the thing that mostly wastes your time are not the internet,
movies or the social medias, its actually frequent switching between study
methods. hence try to stick to one study method for atleast one week.
9. keep your lecturers’ notes from first year. jangan
buang. bukukan supaya takde yang hilang. nanti masok clinical year (or time
houseman) maybe akan guna balik
on maintaining your iman
10. tiap masuk waktu solat or tiap kali dengar azan terus
stop semua kerja teros gerak masjid/surau utk smayang jemaah. this is the least
you can do to maintain your iman. if this one tak boleh jaga, sorry to say but
more advanced thing (eg baca Quran, qiamullail, dhuha, zikir, akan lebih lebur)
11. baca Quran tiap hari jangan tinggal even atleast semuka
sehari, no matter how busy you think you are. (and you’re not busy at all
actually)
12. biasakan diri dengan bangun malam and solat sunat
dhuha, if possible tiap hari
13. bila ada majlis ilmu kat surau/masjid make sure attend.
wajib attend. tinggai sat la stadi tu sambong balik lepas isyak.
14. for those who aim higher, start hafal Quran dari 1st
year, even just sehari semuka. by 5th year if you maintain dah dapat
capai banyak actually. the hardest thing is, ofcourse, nak maintain tu susah
on discipline part (which is
10 times more important than studying part) - the first 3 (points 15,16,17), if
followed strictly is enough to survive 5 years of medical school without
problems
15. there are 3 things you need to have to become a good
medstudent. one - come earlier than everyone else. two - work harder than
everyone else. three - never give excuse.
16. learn to wakeup at 5 am everyday. no matter cuti tak
cuti, hari kerja or weekends, ada kelas takde kelas, exciting day or depressing
day, tidor awal or tidor lewat, wakeup at 5 am everyday.
17. no matter how hard it is, you must always train your
body to never sleep in between suboh and isyak. (qailulah exception)
18. never give excuse. datang lewat sebab sakit perot? say
nothing. sampai lewat sebab kucing beranak? say nothing. tak stadi sebab
semalam demam? say nothing. latih diri to never ever give excuse, even if it’s
a legit one. if dr tanya just say “sorry dr, I’m gonna make sure it never
happens again”
19. never ever talk back to the lecturer
20. aim to do everything earlier than everyone else. “3
hours earlier is better than one minute late” - shakespear
on times of down or stress
21. sometimes you’re gonna feel down or feel not as great
as your other friends. its fine. learning medicine is no competition. learn at
your own pace.
22. whenever you’re scolded or demotivated by the lecturer
its also fine. don’t feel down or stress. instead, smiles as wide as possible
and say to the lecturer “sorry dr, I’ll improve myself and try to become
better!” :D - being told you have done a
poor job means you can only do better after this!
23. some people are struggling with knowledge. some
struggle with skills. some struggle with attitude. some in combinations. laugh
at no one. pandang rendah at no one. you don’t know who is struggling for what
24. sometimes, you felt so down and unworthy and useless
that you actually cried. its fine. completely fine. let it all out.
25. the body is like a balloon. the more you fill it up with
stresses the more it will stretches up until one point it will blow. let it
out. don’t keep it all inside yourself. talk more, smiles more, laugh more! :D
26. failures means extra time to learn. think nothing else.
you don’t fail because you’re stupid, you fail because Allah wants you to learn
more than other medstudents. lecturer takde masa nak saja2 failkan students or saja2
marah students.
27. talk to someone you trust, if you feel so down you
cannot keep it inside yourself any longer. seek help if you must. if you think
you cannot say to anyone, try write it out on piece of paper.
28. if any of your friend ever come tell you he is down or
stress or anything, just listen. says nothing. give no advice and don’t be a
jerk. he just want someone to listen and he will feel better by himself. just
by listening you might save your friend’s life.
29. medical education is a lifelong learning process. its
ok if you don’t know everything now as long as you’re willing to continuously
learn.
